Holiday round-up

Hey you, thanks for dropping in.
Here's some updates from the workshop.

This is a typical first view of my little workshop as I enter it, lotsa toys!

Here's soapbox frame 2.0 under construction, and a good example of how my jigging bench gets used.

Below is a picture of some i.d. badges I've made for my recycled ammo tins, should be helpful to locate all the hardware quicker.

Then there is this picture I found in a book on my holidays, very interesting drive arrangement!

 and then there's this goofball!
My last day of holidays handle-bar mo.
(I'm not normally cross-eyed though)

Thanks for tuning in folks!

A New Year

Welcome to 2013.

2013 kicks off with a few weeks at home with the family and plenty of time to tinker in the garage.

About a year ago I started to build a work bench (when am I not building another bench?) and the bench was to be for jigging up my welding work, just small stuff at the moment.

So the design for this bench has been covered before but now it's got closer to completion.

Here's the 10mm plate steel top, getting drilled full of holes.
The purpose of all these holes, 78 in total is to give me a grid pattern of bolt holes to anchor my jobs to the bench.

The clamps used for this application are normally found on milling tables and drill presses but they'll do just fine for what I want.

While I was at it I realised that my welding machine was gonna be to close to the floor once my bench was done so made it a new trolley. Nothing special but room for gloves and helmets to keep 'em off the floor.

Inspiration, not always there when you need it.

So once again it's the festive season and we all wind work down for the year and sit around eating too much and doing too little.... except here at Savage City Industries.

My full time job, is as the name implies, full time, 40hrs plus commute. I'm not whinging about that cause I've got a job and a roof over my head and a garage attached to that roof. So when the call to be at work all day everyday is silenced for those few precious weeks a year it's time to get in the garage and build!

I'll post some photos soon of things that getting progress but until then here's a video I just found, it inspired me to continue on the crazy idea of gravity racing, low carbon - high speed fun.

Enjoy,

Meester Savage

Hey hey hey, so now that the workshop update is well, uh, updated, lets have a look at some of the stuff I've been toying with.

Here's a tall bike that I built out of discarded bikes, maybe one day I'll try and ride it.

and here is Old Man Cuthbert's billy cart that came to me with a wooden front axle and some of the scariest steering I've ever seen, not to mention the cut down lawn chair for a seat?

Since it came into the workshop I've made a front axle and steering hubs, side bars onto the frame, welded on the rear axle and set it square and equal length either side, the seat is a cut down school room chair with a steel frame under welded to the centre frame.

Old Man Cuthbert came over a few weekends ago and we completed the steering links and then he took it for a spin down the street, here's a vid.

So I've not been round these here parts for a while now, but now I'm back and ready to starting posting whats been happening in the workshop.

Since my last post I've learnt to walk right again, I'm back at work and back working in the garage.

I started building workbench No. 2 over christmas, yes I know that was six months ago but it's all nearing completion now. Some how along the way a 3rd bench got made aswell - it's a island bench that hides under the left bench.

Here's some pics.

Still got a bit of painting to do and a 2nd backboard to make but the workbench has grown heaps in the last 6 months. Also our dog Signal has grown a lot in the last 6 months, being a Great Dane I expect she'll get a bit bigger yet.

Some sweet features include:
Stainless steel benchtops - Aw yeah so easy to clean

A sweet vintage Phillips amplifier to get dem tunes cranking out into the street.

Ah Black Coffee beer from the Burleigh Brewing company. Damn fine drinkage.

And hidden in the end of the 3rd bench that rolls under the left banch in the top photo is 9 recycled ammo tins, packed full of nuts, bolts, screws, washers, pool balls, etc.

The aftermath.....

So after shattering the Tibial plateau in my left leg I've had a fair bit of time to sit around and think about a few things....

1. Skateboarding may not be a crime but it's a stupid thing to be doing when you nearly 30.

2. It's rather hard to work on you projects when you can't stand up or carry anything while moving.

3. Planning Soapbox Racer 2.0.

Anyhow here's some photos of what I done did.

Fresh to the hospital, not feeling that hot.

 Post-op x-ray reveals all....

Just a touch swollen and sore.

2nd verse, same as the 1st.

Big 'ole staple zipper.

But now there is only 11 more days til I should be ready to start walking!
So more progress on the racer soon.

Sorry peeps posts will be sparse while I recover from a broken tibia..... so sore.

PROGRESS!

So it's been far to long with out a update for you all out there but Savage City Industries has had a few delays, hiccups and unplanned hurdles.

Unfortunatly I missed the race, but next year we'll be there - hopefully with 2 soapbox racers!
Until then here's some updates.... with photos as promised.

Cutting metal with... uh... METAL!! Brutal!
This is the pipe that becomes the radius rods.

Drilling metal with metal, so much metal, AWESOME!
This is 20mm box section that will become the drag-link for the steering.

Milling metal with metal.
Making the front ends for the radius rods, many hours works in these 2 jerks!

The skeleton of the beast, with a front axle, radius rods and some sweet tread-plate floor in the front!

Sitting in the garage on all 4 paws for the first time! Very exciting times now.

Check back, more updates next friday.... more building next week.
